Am I doing Prague wrong?
In Prague at the moment and staying at Sir Toby's Inn (known for it's atmosphere, but honestly am struggling to get to know people here - bar was dead last night even though it's booked out. Weird.) Anyway, I just don't really get Prague so far. It's absolutely stunning. So. Damn. Beautiful. But fuck, it feels like tourism has swamped the place. Even a good 10-15 minute walk away from Charles Bridge and Old Town Square and you still see the big groups following the tour guide and I don't know how many tourist tack shops there are, selling the I Love Prague and Communist hats (which, is totally wrong.) Last couple of days I've just walked and tried to explore and get a taste of something unique, but it really does feel like everything is heard towards tourism. I was in Bangkok about six months ago - the most visited city in the world, and when you get away from Khao San Road, it really does feel like you're immersed in Bangkok and 99% of people you'd walk past would be Thai, just because it's so huge and so many Thais live there as well. It's similar in London - once you're away from the main tourism attractions, you still see Londoners going about their life (even in central London and places like Westminster "British").
Ultimately. I like to go places to get a sense of their culture and atmosphere; all I've got here so far is one big tourist trap; the only saving grace is how damn beautiful it is.
Haven't really been able to enjoy the nightlife as, like I said, hostel seems a bit quiet for but whatever reason.
I feel like the Czech people are pretty cold too. Walked into a restaurant today, not knowing you had to be seated, he comes over and laughs at me and tells me to go down to the front. A few times I've had a stone cold "no" when asking shops if they sell tram tickets. Even if I'm trying to talk Czech too.
So many people rave about Prague as their favourite city. I'm here until Wednesday and prepared to give it another chance, but jeez it's testing me. Maybe it's because it's Christmas and that attracts the crowds, I dunno.
Feel free to give any suggestions. I think I'm going to hit up the Castle tomorrow and the Jewish museum.
