Travelling with a disability?
I've got an odd and possibly a bit paranoid question that I'd only be comfortable posing through the anonymity of the internet.
I'm really interested in solo travel. I'm not a very worldly guy, I've never been outside North America, but I've been feeling the pull to get out and see the world for a few years. I'm young, I have about 30k saved and the ability to work remotely and nothing tying me down here at home. I'd particularly like to spend time in Eastern Europe. Georgia, Ukraine, Hungary, Romania, but I would also love to see a number of countries in Asia too.
One thing that has been bugging me though lately is worrying about the fact that a disability, which has never really negatively affected my life here at home, might make things more difficult elsewhere. I'm missing one hand entirely cut off at the wrist and have a bit of reduced functionality in the other. In terms of posing physical limitations - yeah, using chopsticks is a bit rough but nothing else really that I can think of gives me any difficulty.
My main concern is finding myself somewhere where the attitudes toward people with visible disabilities are less "modern". I hope I'm not taking an impoverished view of humanity here - but let's face it cultures and attitudes vary and there are places where certain people aren't treated as well as they should be.
So, to those of you who have seen more of this world - is this really a realistic thing to be worried about? Not that I would let it stop me from travelling but I'd like to have a better idea of what things are really like out there.
