South Dakota to California in the winter?
I moved to South Dakota from Northern California at the end of July for school. I’m looking at driving back at the end of December to visit family and friends for Winter Break, but am unsure if I should even go.
Is it advisable to make the trip to California from (northeastern) South Dakota between December 18th and January 1st, and of so what routes? When I drove out here I went through Nevada, Northern Utah, and Wyoming as it was the quickest (did it in 3 days), but am not opposed to taking a more southern/slower route if it would be safer. Flying is expensive and I have a cat I would be taking with me, which is why I would prefer driving.
I don’t have a ton of experience driving in snow, though I do have good winter tires, an emergency kit, etc. I would love to see family and friends, but not if I’m going to have a hell of a time getting there and back.
Thanks!
