PSA: If you have a known snoring problem, DON’T stay in hostels.
It’s not fair to anyone. You can say get ear plugs all you want but just the other day in Hanoi I was wearing ear plugs and could hear this dude’s snoring through it. I put music in my ears and could hear his snoring over it. And he had apnea so he would stop breathing for like ten seconds then make the loudest god awful snarl, followed by everyone in the room groaning at 1am because no one can sleep without being woken up ever 30 seconds to this guy. I eventually went and woke him up to roll over and he just kept going back to the same position.
The next morning we were just like dude, you REALLY snore. And his response was “Yeah I know! Can’t help it. Sorry mate” and shrugged.
Not good enough.
If you know you’re a loud snorer, then you’re just as bad as someone coming into the room at night talking, banging things around, and keeping everyone up, whether or not you can control it. Talk to a doctor and find a solution, or pay for your own room. I’ve lost too much sleep over the past few months to people without regard to the social contract of a dorm room, and I include known-snoring issues in that break of contract.
Edit: this stuff has been talked about before I’m sure. And I don’t want to make anyone feel bad about themselves, but I’m up late again dealing with another loud snorer and I just had to write this post instead of suffocating them with a pillow for the sake of the room. There are options, there are remedies and strips and sleeping positions and whatnot. If you want to stay in a dorm but you’re not actively preventing it then it’s just not fair.
