Planning a trip to South Korea, looking for advice!

Hey guys! Sorry for the long post ahead. I'm planning to visit for two weeks sometime in late January-February (tentative 24/1-6/2, or 4/2-18/2) and I've got a couple of questions :)

I haven't booked anything yet and I haven't made a day-day plan, but here's a general breakdown of my planned itinerary:

  • Days 1-5: Seoul; a day trip to Nami Island, another day trip to Jeonju (or is it better to stay there overnight?)
  • Days 6-9: Busan; a day trip to Gamcheon Cultural Village
  • Days 10-11: Gyeongju
  • Days 12-14: Back to Seoul for free time before I catch my flight home

Is Jeju worth going to in winter? I've heard that it's difficult without renting a car but I likely wont be doing that because I've got no experience driving on potentially icy roads :( I'm not great at hiking either, so I'll probably only go on the less difficult ones. I'm considering going to a Hanok village for a day or two.

These questions are a bit silly, but it never gets that cold in Australia, and doesn't snow where I live. Will I be fine with just regular sneakers, or should I invest in heavy duty, waterproof shoes (like Timberlands)? I have a thick woollen coat that's definitely warm enough for freezing temperatures, but would I be better off buying a puffy winter jacket instead?

With all this moving around, is it generally acceptable to bring a cabin-sized suitcase on trains, busses etc.? I'm packing light to have room to bring back tons of stuff and may have to buy things like thermals if it's colder than I'm prepared for. It might be more difficult for me with a backpack, but I don't want to be too inconsiderate lugging around a suitcase on public transport.

I'm also looking into staying at hostels for the first time, but in a private room (20F, my parents would freak out and I'd definitely get mugged or murdered otherwise /s). I'm going to try and put myself out there for once in my life and look for meetups and stuff while in Seoul, if you have any tips for socialising with other travellers that would be awesome!

Thanks in advance!
