Help, got swarmed by teens in Paris
Using a throwaway because I’m pretty embarassed. So I was walking along the Seine river, near the Louvre, and was crossing the street... a gang of teens approached me with clipboards asking me to sign something. I’ve already read all the scams so ignored them and kept walking... they crowded me into the corner and gripped my shoulders o— I wrestled free of their grip and as I ran in the other direction, heard that the zip my my bag and realized they had taken my wallet. I ran after them and they had dropped my wallet. The gang casually walked away. I went through their pockets screaming at them to give me back my shit... eventually they ran into the nearby park. It was such a brazen attack out of nowhere, and I thought I was well prepared... I’ve done a lot of travelling with no issues. I’m just shaken right now, and angry/saddened that my afternoon was marred by something like this in an otherwise beautiful city. I went through my wallet, realized they had opened an inside zipper. Counted all my money — I have czech and other currency in the wallet as I’ve been traveling for a while now. It seems like they didn’t take anything. My credit cards, passport (dumb I know... should not have brought it along), and money seems to be all there. A nice Parisian man heard me shouting and running after them calling for the police... checked to see if I was ok. On the way back to my hotel I saw some police and reported it to them. They suggested I make a report, but honestly I just wanted more police presence in that area. Is it normal for them to not take any foreign money? They had plenty of opportunity to do so... and exchange it. I feel extremely lucky to have my wallet... they could have easily passed whatever they got back and forth among themselves so that I wouldn’t know what happened.
Tl;dr... got swarmed by youth in Paris, was held and had my bag opened and my wallet removed. Seemed like they took nothing after seeing foreign currency and not Euros (but they didn’t check a different zipper where I kept Euros). Do I need to keep an eye on my credit cards being used? I don’t think they were organized enough to have credit card skimmers too....
