Multiple trips into the US on an ESTA?

Hi guys, has anyone had any experience getting into the US using an ESTA/Visa Waiver twice in a 6 month period?

If I entered with the ESTA, stayed for say 80 days, exited the country and travelled South America for about a month, would I have any issues getting back into the US for another couple of months? They say it's at the discretion of border security but I'm hoping someone has had some experience with this.

I have a letter of employment from my company confirming that I've taken a long leave of absence and will be returning to work after 6 months. I'll also have maybe 18k in my bank account.

Is that sufficient or do you think it's likely I'd get turned away? Is there a rule of thumb on how long I should be out of the country for before trying to get back in?
