Has anyone been to the Yukon territory? Thinking about making it my next destination.
I'm Canadian, and so if I were to make this trip happen, I'm not at all worried about passports/visas/currency...all that stuff that comes with flying internationally. I'd be staying in Canada the whole time. Here are my ideas and questions:
I think I'd want to go for one week in the summer of next year (likely August 2018). I'm more interested in the nature and scenery than I am in staying within Whitehorse city limits. So I would fly to Whitehorse and rent a car so I can drive out to other towns and explore more of the Yukon. Do some hiking some days, drive around aimlessly on other days, and just relax and do nothing on other days. I think a week would be enough time to see a lot, but not too long that I run out of things to do.
My biggest concern (and probably the make-or-break factor) is accommodations. I know Whitehorse has a few hostels and whatnot, but if I were to drive a few hours outside the city, is there much out there for places to stay? I love camping and have no problem sleeping outside, but being amongst grizzlies and polar bears, I'm a little bit hesitant on that front. Would my best bet be to sleep in my car? If anyone has any info on accommodations in the more remote parts of the Yukon, I'd love to hear it.
And my other question isn't a deal-breaker, but I'm just wondering for curiosity's sake, what kind of trails/tours/excursions there are, guided or not.
Everything else involved in the planning is a non-issue. Budget, I have an idea on what it'll cost to get from Toronto to Whitehorse and back again. I'll be covered for transportation with a rental car. No visa needed. I'm confident with everything else except accommodations.
