Finding myself after a breakup
I briefly thought about posting this in the relationships sub, but thought that there must have been many other people who have gone through this as well.
Long story short, my girlfriend and I broke up after close to 2 years. I just got into a postgraduate program 10 weeks ago, but will have a short break (3-4 weeks) in a few more weeks. My mind has been completely wrecked. Even though I am speaking to a counseller, the thoughts still keep coming. I used to travel by myself (been to Hong Kong and to Bangkok) for varying periods of time. I want to try doing that again, the only difference is that I can't be texting and sending her pictures of my travels. I do think I need to get away, but I'm not sure what kind of places or activities I should be looking for to help with the grief or healing process. Would going somewhere with an activities-focused (e.g. diving, yoga retreat, meditation retreat) or an exploration-focused (e.g. visiting tourist attractions) be more beneficial? Personally, I think that going somewhere with the intent of engaging in a particular activity may backfire (if I don't like the activity), but that going somewhere with a focus on exploration might be too lonely. Given that I'm going to be alone in another country instead of being alone at home, I will be losing some form of social support. I definitely do not want to break down while travelling.
My question is, what kind of activities or places should I be looking at? I've always been a bit of a loner, but I love meeting new people. Are there any volunteer opportunities that I can partake in for a few weeks? Somewhere I can go to learn something or do something? Perhaps some of you who have been through similar experiences might care to share, like what helped the most for you? Any suggestions for locations or activities (preferably within SEA) that could possibly help will be very much appreciated!
