Denmark / Sweden - Hotels & Driving
Hi everyone!
My girlfriend and I are going to be in Sweden this month. Starting and ending from Copenhagen.
I'm trying to decide between car rental and train. I'm under 25 (23 currently almost 24) and I have a couple years of experience driving Manual Transmission. But I know I will probably be hit with a surplus charge.
On Expedia, adding a car rental costs about $120 for the whole week (before surpluses). That's a good deal to me because it opens up the possibility of going anywhere any time and allows us to drive to landmarks and places with difficult or non-existing public transportation. Plus we'll have less time to worry about travel details and logistics.
How much is the surplus charge for under 25 drivers? In the US it's around $25 per day which is pretty steep.
I'll probably be picking up the car from Copenhagen Airport.
Finally, in terms of hotels, I do not know which cities we will be in and for how long. We have a general plan but really without feeling the vibe of the city and whether it fits our preference, I want to see if it's better to not pre-plan hotels and just stay at nearby hotels or AirBnBs.
Is that reasonable? Waiting until the day of to reserve a hotel? Leaving most of our travel items in the car? Will it be way more expensive? We don't need luxury, just a clean room in a safe space is fine.
TLDR:
- How much is surplus charge for car rental for under 25 years old?
- Is renting a car worth it? Parking & Tolls too.
- Should I plan hotels ahead of time, or just reserve them on the day that we need them, to keep flexibility options open?
- AirBnB vs Hotels?
- Is it safe to leave stuff in the car?
