Where is the best place to see the northern lights?
I live near Washington DC and I would like to plan to travel to see the northern lights. I know they are hard to predict more than a day in advance but financially jetting off at the last minute sounds beyond my means?
Since my wife is a teacher it is hard to vacation in the winter except near Christmas/New year's and then it is top dollar.
Iceland is affordable and only five hours by air but historically cloudy in the dark winter.
Norway seen a bit far considering the time constraints?
The summer has very limited nighttime hours anywhere in the north.
Alaska is not only very far away but expensive.
What ideas do you have? Have you seen the northern lights? Was it luck or planned?
