Where in Oceania/SE Asia to spend 2 weeks
Trip: January or Feb. of 2018. I'll be traveling solo but like to socialize when traveling by meeting other travelers in hostels or locals if possible. While I like to be frugal, I can shell out for the occasional resort stay or cool experience (more of a "flashpacker" than a backpacker).
Here are itineraries I'm considering:
a. Northern Thailand to Southern Vietnam: fly into BKK and out of Saigon with stops at Ko Chang, someplace in Cambodia, and Cu Chi tunnels in Viet
b. Philippines only: fly into Manilla, see Corrigidor for a day, go to Bohol Island and explore/see the chocolate hills for a few days, and then fly to Palawan for a few days before flying home via Manilla.
c. Australia only: fly into Melbourne and out of Sydney, with stops in Tasmania (overnight ferry from Melbourne) and potentially Cairns for Great Barrier Reef tour.
d. Australia + New Zealand: fly into Melbourne or Sydney, do some day trips and overnighters, fly to Christchurch and spend a week in South island before flying home via Aukland
My 2 experiences in the region: (1) 10 days in Thailand/Cambodia (BKK, Angkor Wat, and Ko Phangan) and (2) 9 days in Malaysia + Singapore, Phuket, and Ko Phi Phi. I loved Ko Phi Phi the most for the beautiful nature, snorkeling, and nightlife. I also really enjoyed renting a moped around Ko Phangan but thought the full moon parties were a bit much. Phuket was OK.
My interests: high quality food, good for solo travel, 20th century history, natural beauty or at least interesting geology, jungle trekking, hiking, snorkeling, and an island or beach location to spend a couple days relaxing and exploring. Temples are interesting but as I've already been to Angkor Wat, aren't the highest priority of the trip.
Which would you recommend based on time of year and my considerations? Would love your input! Thanks!
