What to see in inland (as opposed to coastal) Maine?
Have four days to kill out of Portland, Maine in early October of this year. My plan is to rent a car and explore. Obviously, there are a ton of beautiful things to see along the coast but I actually spent a similar stretch of time last year crawling the coast from New Hampshire all the way to Lubec so I don't really care to repeat any of these areas. This year I was thinking I might concentrate on the inland part of the state instead, but I'm really at a loss as to what might be worth seeing, if anything.
Some friends are suggesting I visit Baxter State Park, but I'm not in remotely good enough shape to hike Katahdin so I'm not sure if it's worth the drive up that way. Any thoughts on this or other suggestions of places to visit?
