Traveling in Switzerland Dec 28 thru Jan 7
My wife and I are planning to travel Switzerland over the New Year's holiday. We fly into Zurich Dec 28, and out Jan 7. So far, the city itinerary we have is:
Lucerne: 1 night
Zermatt: 3 nights
Bern: 2 nights
Melchsee-Frutt: 2 nights
Zurich: 1 night
Some things to note:
We are not skiers.
We don't want to travel on Dec 31 or Jan 1, hence the 3 nights in Zermatt, but we are not sure whether 3 nights in Zermatt is too many, since we are not skiers.
We would like to try to squeeze Geneva in there, maybe in place of Lucerne.
We want to do Melchsee-Frutt at the end, because they have night sledging (sledding) that starts that weekend.
Questions
Will traveling at this time of year be more difficult because of the holidays?
We want to spend the three nights from Dec 30 to Jan 2 in one place. Is it unwise to choose Zermatt for those three nights if we are not skiers? Is there another place where those three nights--including New Year's Eve--would be better spent?
We don't totally understand the Swiss Rail Pass/Half Fare Card thing. If we buy a Flex Card for four days of Rail travel, will it cover the costs of cable cars and other local transport for the whole trip, or only for the days we choose to activate the Flex Card?
