Traveling Bangladesh by Boat (Dhaka & Sundarbans Recommendations)

Beware: Dhaka has TERRIBLE traffic. We’ve been around the world and seen some nasty traffic jams, but Dhaka really does take the cake. No hyperbole here.
Moving: We attempted to use Uber, which sometimes worked. The Uber from the airport to our hotel in Banani cost 275 Taka and came in ten minutes or so. However, other Ubers either took forever or just never came, so it’s definitely hit or miss. Uber is always cheaper than a taxi arranged through your hotel, which are crazy expensive.
In addition, we flagged down peddle rickshaws, which are more effective on the narrow alleys of the old town, and taxis off the street.
We also walked quite a bit, both in the downtown and Banani/Gulshan areas. And, of course, we eventually did Bangladesh by boat, too. More on that later.
Eating: Food in Bangladesh is quite tasty and Dhaka has some decent spots. We enjoyed the included breakfast at our hotel, which could be either western or Bangali (just ask in advance). For local eats, we’d recommend Star Restaurant in Banani, which was crazy cheap and delicious, or Beauty Lacchi in the old town. If you’re looking for international food or a more classy meal, check out the large hotels.
