Scotland rental car: questions on size and drop off

My (future) wife and I are going out to Scotland on our honeymoon. During the trip, we're planning to rent a car for 10 days to drive from Edinburgh out to Loch Lomond, Oban, Fort William, and back through the Cairngorms. I would love to hear your advice or opinions on two areas:

1) Size. She would like the largest car possible for comfort; I would like the smallest car possible for maneuverability, provided that my head (6'2"/1.88 m, mostly legs) and our luggage (2-3 carry on sized bags, 2 backpacks) fit inside. I'm leaning towards a compact (Ford Focus or similar); does that sound too small? Should I consider putting up another $50 to get a midsize instead?

2) Destination - am I stupid for considering a one way rental from Edinburgh to Manchester? (Our flights are out of Manchester.) There's a part of me that likes the idea of keeping the car until Manchester to allow for maximum flexibility on the last day. Rather than dropping the car off at the airport, transferring to the train station, and taking a train, we could simply drive down to Manchester at our leisure. However, our second to last day starts in Pitlochry, about six hours north of Manchester. Do you think the flexibility is worth the drive? From what I can tell, the costs are basically the same - the rental car rate is the same, and the cost of petrol would be similar to the train tickets.
