Not only the first time traveling solo...the first time leaving USA

Hello! (I am new to not only this sub but also reddit in general. If I'm breaking any rules or anything let me know and I'll edit or remove the post)

I have never left the country. I am from LA and have gone on two flights in my life to visit family in Arizona and in Texas. I have a large family and was low income my whole life so traveling wasn't in my family's budget. I am about to enter my senior year of college and managed to save a lot of money this summer working full time. I have decided that as a graduation gift, I will be gifting myself a solo trip to anywhere I choose in June and/or July. I want to be traveling for 2-3 weeks (I probably couldn't afford to do more than that).

I don't speak any other languages which makes me hesitant to go to some areas but I also love taking risks, trying new foods, and enjoy cultures other than my own.

I have so many questions: when to best buy a flight if I am planning to go in about 9ish months, hotels vs. hostels, how to best protect myself as a 21 F, etc. Best places to go during those months? How can I arrange to do some volunteering for a few days while abroad?

Places I am thinking off the top of my head: Japan, France, Thailand, Netherlands, Germany, Italy.

I guess this post is really broad but any advice, tips, suggestions would be amazing. I would love to hear any experiences of those who traveled alone in a different country for the very first time in their early 20s.

Thank you for reading!
