How is my revised 16 day New Zealand itinerary for December?
I'm a 21 year old male solo traveler. I will be doing only the South Island and renting a car. I want to see as much as I can, but that also means I'll be driving a fair bit. Hopefully it isn't too much. I understand Christchurch isn't a hot location right now because they're still rebuilding from the earthquake, but I figured going back to Queenstown in a different direction than the way I came would allow me to see more of the country.
Day 1:
• Arrive 8:30 am in Auckland, fly to Queenstown
• Pick up car
Day 2:
• Queenstown
Day 3:
• Queenstown-Te Anau late in day
Day 4:
• Te Anau-Milford Sound and then back to Te Anau
Day 5:
• Te-Anau-Doubtful Sound and then back to Te Anau
Day 6:
• Te-Anau-Queenstown
Day 7:
• Queenstown-Franz Josef
Day 8:
• Franz Josef and Fox Glacier if time
Day 9:
• Franz Josef-Abel Tasman
Day 10:
• Abel Tasman
Day 11:
• Abel Tasman (don't know if I need a second full day here?)
Day 12:
• Abel Tasman-Christchurch
Day 13:
• Christchurch-Tekapo
Day 14:
• Tekapo-Mt Cook
Day 15:
• Mt Cook-Queenstown
Day 16:
• Queenstown/TBA
Day 17:
• Fly out
My only main concern is that going to Abel Tasman takes a lot of driving time (6-7 hours from Franz Josef), but I do really want to see it. I could save a lot of hassle by cutting it out, but then I wouldn't get to see the much of the upper half of the South Island.
