Help a noob prepare for India

Hi everybody

I'm doing a trip to northern India this winter. I feel like I have most things sorted out, especially where I want to go and what I want to see. What I'm most concerned about are questions of a more practical matter. So if anybody would help enlighten me I would be very grateful.

The first advice I always hear on this sub is to never do a super comprehensive itinerary. So my rough plan looks like:

I am flying into New Delhi this December and will use the city as my hub. From there I will to explore Rajasthan (Jaipur, Pushkar, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer etc.). When I'm done there I'll head back to Delhi to do the whole Himalayan loop (Rishikesh, Shimla, Manali, Dharamsala, Amritsar etc.). Then travel back to Delhi again to head east to see Agra and Varanasi. And if there is money left maybe fly down to Goa and do something along the lines of Goa, Gokarna and Hampi. (Any comments, suggestions?)

So to the questions...

How do I arrange my domestic travel?

I want to go by train for the most part, so do I just go to the train station and buy a ticket? Or do I have to secure the tickets days before? As far as I can tell, people buy tickets online, but where? Any apps for this?

What age group usually backpacks India?

I'm 21 myself and hoping to meet people around my age. I'm not much of a partyer, which is one of the reasons I would rather do India than SEA. My gut feeling tells me I wont meet many gapyearers like myself. What age group/type of people will I typically run in to?

What should I pack for the winter in Himachal Pradesh?

I plan on being there around Januar/Febuary. Some say it's super cold and I need to pack heavy winter clothes. Others say I will be fine with a sweater and wool socks. Any first hand experiences?

Sorry if the questions are standard and generic. But I just haven't had much luck in finding answers elsewhere.

Cheers.
