I'm planning on proposing to my girlfriend in a couple weeks, and have reservations in Savannah GA for a long weekend. Unfortunately, it's looking like hurricane Irma may be coming up the coast in the next week which could potentially devastate savannah, so I'm tying to come up with contingencies.

I chose Savannah because it's a small beautiful historic city with a lot of rustic charm and haunted paranormal energy and attractions.

What cities to the northeast have similar characteristics? We live in eastern Virginia and we're hoping to keep travel to around 8 hours or so, which puts new York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, etc within reach. Every state seems to claim to have dozens of "the most romantic cities in the US" and I don't know what to do.
