So I usually lean away from all inclusive packages preferring to stay off the beaten path and enjoy local foods and stuff but my SO wants to do an all inclusive in Mexico for our winter vacation (Cancun, Cozumel, Rivera Maya, and other places within that tourist region area).

I picture all inclusive resorts really negatively similar to cruises although I've never been on either (pre-packaged vacation, devoid of culture, staff that hate their lives, etc).

Is it worth it as a seasoned traveler to stay at an AI in Mexico and how do I pick a place where I can enjoy my vacation? I obviously am weary about the cheapest ones but some of these AIs are $20000 for a week vacation.
