Greyhound - am I making a huge mistake?
In a previous post, you guys kindly helped me decide how to spend my time in South-Eastern USA. Ended up deciding that I will spend around 2-3 days in Savannah, GA, before going for the remainder of the trip to New Orleans, LA. I try to comply with rule #7 - "do your own research". I'm just a really cautious guy, and I trust you all more than random forums.
Logistics is a concern. I was thinking about renting a car in Savannah and redeliver it in NOLA. But that's expensive (around 580 USD for a short week). So as an alternative I was looking at Amtrak and Greyhound as means for transportation. Greyhound will cost 80 USD (for either option below), which sounds reasonable.
Savannah -> Jacksonville -> Tallahassee -> New Orleans
The trip is 15 hours long and will involve 3 transfers. The final stretch is run by a "partner carrier" of Greyhound. My question is - do you think this is a good idea? Are Greyhounds generally reliable and safe? What are the chances of a SNAFU making me stuck somewhere, having missed a transfer?
Savannah -> Atlanta -> New Orleans
Alternatively, there's a 20-hour version via Atlanta rather than Florida. There's a 5 hour stop in Atlanta, which is the one and only transfer. An added bonus is that I know someone in Atlanta. A minor problem is that I will arrive in NOLA at 5:30 in the morning and not being able to check in at the Airbnb until 12 hours later.
So what do you guys think? Greyhound a-OK, or should I get a rental?
Thank you all!
