Friends and I are planning a trip to the mountains. Where should we go?

My best friends and I wanted to take a trip around December when our school break starts. We are all 19, and really hoping to go somewhere with mountains. Which is really an awkward age, because we can't rent a car or anything, so we haven't really figured out our plans yet. We're from Florida.

We were looking towards Colorado and North Carolina, (leaning more towards North Carolina because it's slightly cheaper.) The only thing is, we'd be flying in so we don't know what the transportation there is like? Or since it’s around an 8 hour drive, would it be better to just drive there? If anyone else has any suggestions, please let me know.

We are interested in mostly scenery, and were planning on finding a deal with a cabin near the mountains. We'd love to hike, and do more of the outdoorsy nature things.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
