Do you outline a trip first and then buy airfare (and hotel/tours/etc.)? Or buy airfare first and then plan the trip around it?
Since I like to spend 1.5-2 weeks in a country, I feel like I need to outline my trip first and then buy airfare, especially to see if I can buy open jaw flights to optimize the time spent in a country (e.g. if I'm going to Vietnam and traveling northbound, to fly into Ho Chi Minh and out of Hanoi instead of flying into Ho Chi Minh city, ending the trip in Hanoi just to fly south to Ho Chi Minh city to fly north again back home).
I'm curious what you guys do and if there are factors that influence you to flex one way vs another. I'm thinking of traveling to Israel with a stop in Jordan for Petra for 2 weeks this winter, and I'm uncertain if I should fly in/out of Tel Aviv since it's a smaller area so the time saved is negligible, or if there's an open jaw itinerary that may help me optimize my time better (in Tel Aviv, out Amman?).
