Considering a mammoth road trip this coming summer but I need some advice - is this the place for that?
My parents are moving again sometime between December and June, and that'll leave them to sell our two cars where they live now - a Honda CRV and a Proton Saga.
The Honda is worth enough that they're definitely going to sell it, but they've said the Proton is now so worthless that I can have it if I want. It's not too old (2010 or later), and has a relatively low mileage, though it is second hand. I want to bring it home to Europe - I don't care if I run it into the ground on the way and it dies on me when I get there, or if it becomes my daily car, but I need it to get me there.
That said, my knowledge of car maintenance is basic, and this would involve some rough roads and a long trip up through China into Russia, then a long drive west. And even if the roads were okay the whole way, it's an immensely long trip.
Could any experienced road-trippers help me out work out things that are likely to go wrong along the way, and give me advice on learning how to fix them? Or could anyone confirm my fear that this is perhaps an impossible trip without a skilled car mechanic? Either way I'd like to know what I need to know to do the trip, or that it's something better left undone.
Ta.
