Carrying the Jansport Big Student backpack as a personal item on United?

Hi! I’ve searched the sub but couldn’t find a specific answer to this.

I am going on my first flight soon (domestic) and I’ve purchased a United Economy ticket (not basic) which allows me a carry on and a personal item. Carry on dimensions is 9x14x22 and personal is 9x10x17.

I have a small rolling suitcase I will use as my carry-on tucked into an overhead bin. As my personal Item I would like to use my Jansport Big Student backpack which is 10x13x17. However, it’s a couple of linear inches over the limit (36 vs. 40).

I doubt I will be stuffing this backpack full, but the width is still a little wide. I plan on bringing my laptop and DSLR in this pack so I absolutely don’t want it gate checked.

Will they allow this? Will they even ask? Thanks! (Any other travel tips for first time flier would be great!)
