Backpacking part of Central America - would love to go to a Caribbean Island but need your help deciding which!
I understand Hurricane Maria/Irma are/have caused much destruction in the Caribbean, so this will surely impact where I choose to go. In saying that, if an island has been affected but is still functioning for tourists then I will happily take my tourist $ there if it will help in some way.
Alrighty, so! I am doing a wee trip on my own (24F) starting Dec 1 and ending mid Jan. Since I am on my own, I will be staying in hostels, trying to make friends to travel with (lol) and I'm going to do the whole thing on a pretty low budget. I'm into activities, hikes, diving, surfing, and experiencing culture! What I am NOT into is the a resort sort of experience.
My very loose itinerary goes like this:
1 Dec - 15 Dec - Mexico city/Oaxaca/Chiapas 15 Dec - 25 Dec - Guatemala 25 Dec - 30 Dec - Belize - overnight bus from Belize to Cancun to fly out from there- 31 Dec - 13 Jan - Caribbean Island TBC 13 Jan - fly home to New Zealand
I had considered continuing down Central America all the way Nicaragua but then I would have had to bus alllllll the way back up to Mexico City to then fly home and it doesn't make sense to waste precious time back tracking.
So, I have decided I'll do Mexico, Guatemala, Belize and then head up to Cancun so I can fly from there to an island for the remainder of my trip.
Any recommendations for islands in the Caribbean that are: 1. Suitable for a backpacker/budget traveller 2. Have activities, hiking surfing, diving etc 3. Can provide me with cultural experiences
