Amtrak questions for a newbie.
So in December, I'm considering traveling with my 3 kids from Southern California to Memphis via AmTrak. I've never ridden AmTrak so I have many questions. There would be 4 of us: me and my 3 kids who are college age. The trip looks to take about 3 days because it involves connecting parts of 2 routes. Sooooo...
(1) To save $$$, I'm thinking about getting 2 reserved coach seats and 1 "superliner room" that has 2 beds... and we would rotate the 4 of us between the 2 seats and 2 beds... to get sleep. Is that really doable? Does AmTrak allow that?
(2) Can you see much out the windows? Does the room have windows? Do the 2 in the room also have seats elsewhere in the train car? We would be on the routes called "Southwest Chief" and "City of New Orleans" to Memphis.
(3) Am I out of my freaking mind to attempt the 4 of us traveling 3 days cross-country by train?
(4) Any further advice about using AmTrak?... how to save money on AmTrak?... is it worth it?... anything? Bueller? Bueller? anything?
Thanks in advance.
