Two students thinking of a trip to Florence early 2018, could use some opinions...

I'm not sure where else to post this so I shall leave it here in the hopes that some more experienced travelers may share their opinions!

My girlfriend and I are looking to go somewhere over the winter break (early January since it fits around my uni timetable) and are debating where to go. Since this will end up being my first journey abroad without family - excited as all hell I suggested Italy, namely Florence.

Looking around, we've seen the prices and have decided it's totally viable for a good 4 days in the city. It then struck me that Italy in general is a summer destination, and we'd technically be going in the middle of the off-season since in my research it appears the ideal times to go are May/June and October.

Hearing this though, my research also yielded that by going in January the prices are super cheap (as expected) and it will be a lot quieter in terms of tourists.

So, I'm kinda stuck. I've wanted to see Italy since I was a kid but the holiday decisions were always down to the parents as always, so I have 15 years worth of pent up excitement to see the country.

TL;DR - Is Florence worth it in off-season (January) time for 2 students looking to get away for a few days? Heard several varying opinions online and can't decide whether it's best to spend the money here or go experience somewhere else for a Winter holiday.
