Trying to decide on a honeymoon location: the Azores or Italy?
Hi, r/travel! My fiance and I (Americans) are looking to book our tickets for our honeymoon but are having a hard time narrowing down where we want to go. We'll be leaving in the last week of May and coming back sometime in early June (dates are flexible). We are trying to decide between hopping from island to island in the Azores or going to Italy and spending half of our time in Tuscany and the other half on the Amalfi coast. I've been to Italy before (did the Rome, Florence, Venice circuit), but have never been to the Amalfi coast. My fiance has only been to Norway.
My fiance is a really outdoorsy, athletic type. I love to hike as well, but my first love has always been art and history. We're both the type of people who like to be actively doing something during our vacations rather than relaxing on a beach. For reference, our last vacation was a week and a half hiking trip in the Norwegian fjords. We want something a little less intense this time but still fun and engaging.
We're looking for opinions from people who have done either or both for vacations! I've looked up preliminary costs, and it seems like the Azores would be the cheaper option since we are only a couple of hours from Boston, and it seems like food, lodging, and transportation are cheaper in the Azores as well? From my trip to Italy 5 years ago, I remember the food and attractions being very expensive, though that's probably less of a problem now that the exchange rate is more favorable. Our budget is low-to mid range. We're both frugal, but this is also our honeymoon so we are willing to let loose a little bit.
Tl;dr My fiance and I are the active traveler type looking for opinions on the Azores or Tuscany/Amalfi.
