Travelling December-January to California!
Hey everyone! My boyfriend and I are planning a holiday to California. This will be after we graduate high school in November (we live in Australia), and planned around the cheapest flights before we start university next year. We've been considering a road trip, so it would be interesting to hear about any cool land marks we should consider visiting!
Previous travels: I have been around the California/LA area several times, as I have family there, however he has never been to America before.
Length: Around two months
Budget: We've already found cheap flights for a return trip to and from LA. For sleeping arrangements, I have family in the LA area for when we stay there. However if we did go on a road trip, costs for motels/places to sleep would have to be considered. Overall, for personal spending money, food on the road, and motels, our budget would be around $4000 for the two of us, however less than that would definitely be a plus.
Interests: We're mostly interested in finding new experiences that we wouldn't have in our everyday lives in Australia. We've been looking at a lot of museums, art galleries, etc. Although i'm not massively into hiking or anything like that (he is), i'd definitely consider it for the experience. My boyfriend is also really into classic music/orchestras. I've been looking at Disney land, zoo's, etc.
So far, we've been thinking about a road trip for a large part of our holiday. We've based it around a route from someone else on this subreddit, essentially:
LA > Malibu > Santa Barbara > Big Sur > Monterey > Santa Cruz > San Jose > San Francisco > Yostemite > Sequoia > Las Vegas > Grand Canyon > San Diego > back to LA. ( a similar route to this )
It would be a massive massive help if anyone gave any tips on the route we were taking! We'll both be 18, with our Australian P1 licences, if there would be any driving issues with that. I've also been reading posts on this subreddit about other people taking similar road trips in California around the December-January period like us, and commenters saying that roads were closed during that time? Also, how much time would everyone recommend we spend on the road trip vs staying with my family in LA?
Lastly, we've heard good things from people about including Las Vegas and Napa Valley in our trip. We were wondering if this would be worthwhile since we'd both be considered underage in America.
