Questions about Portugal - Weather and Small Towns

Hi everyone! I'm planning my first solo trip ever (so excited!) and I have a couple questions. I'm starting a 4 month internship in the Azores in September, and I'm going to be taking a bit of time off to head to the mainland. I'm going to be doing this either at the end of September or the end of October, but I haven't decided which yet. I'd prefer to go in October (that way I'm not leaving my job basically right after getting there, and hopefully I'll have improved my Portuguese a bit) but I'm not sure about the weather, as it seems like October is the transition point between great weather and the more rainy season. Do you think it will be that much better in September that it's worth it for me to go then instead?

Also, I'm still deciding on my itinerary, so any insight would be appreciated. I'm going to be there for about 10 days (Friday evening to the following Sunday, which month I pick). So far I'm planning for 3 days in each of Lisbon (+ Sintra) and Porto (whether I start in one or the other) but I'm not sure where to go in between. I really like the feel of the small, old European towns, since I never get that in Canada, and I've come up with some that I'd love to check out during those 3-4 ish days I have left:

  • Tomar
  • Coimbra
  • Braga
  • Aveiro
  • Guimaraes
  • Obidos

I really want to experience the cobblestone streets and history that I've had in Europe before, so if anyone could vouch for any of these towns I would greatly appreciate it! Also if any of them are actually more difficult to get to in your experience, that'd be good to know. Thanks!
