Oregon Road Trip
Hi all, I've heard Oregonians (Oregonites? Oreginnies?) are some of the friendliest people in America so I hope you can help me. I'm travelling with a couple of mates from Vancouver to San Francisco starting next Saturday. I've seen so many beautiful photos of Oregon that it was the part of the trip I was looking forward to the most. However, I've discovered we have to get down to California pretty quickly to meet another mate who is flying in, so actually only have about 3 days/ 4 nights between Portland and Eureka (leaving Portland on a Wednesday morning and arriving Eureka Saturday evening). And this means only one night in Portland! It is what it is, so now we are trying to work out what would be the best use of those days.
The route I was looking at was Portland -> Oneonta Gorge -> Columbia River Gorge -> Mt Hood -> Bend -> Crater Lake -> Mount Shasta -> Eureka. I've heard the coast is pretty gorgeous as well and my friend is keen to see that instead but as we are on the coastal road in California I thought maybe staying inland would be a better use of time. The counter argument is that we are also doing Yosemite and Redwood whilst in Cali as well. Basically, we want beauty, and variety.
What I'm unsure of, and what the internet hasn't really helped with, is whether the places we are going through will just be lost on us because we won't have time to appreciate them. For example, we were probably looking at doing the Oneonta and Columbia River Gorges in the same day, before sleeping overnight somewhere between there and Mount Hood - is this too rushed? Will we actually have any time to see anything or does it involve a lot of walking to get to the beautiful places? We are three 28 year old guys keen to see some beautiful nature, do some hiking (if we have time) and maybe have a beer or two, staying in hostels/guesthouses/motels. So I guess main questions are - is that a good route? Is there anywhere we've missed? Anywhere specifically you would recommend staying/not staying overnight? And will we need a permit in advance to do any parks/trails? Is there anything else we should consider before leaving?!
Thank you in advance! This is the route I had in mind but we are very flexible, other than timing - http://ift.tt/2wNdBUo
