Long layover and explore or meet up with friends sooner?
Hey redditors,
My friends and I are planning a trip to Thailand. They have their tickets already since they're going for 3 weeks. I can go for just about a week (~9 days), so I'm flying in later, but flying home with them on the flights they've already booked.
I have a chance to stay in Hong Kong with a long layover (one option for 14hrs and one for 20hr). I have reward points to stay at a hotel for free, so I can sleep if I need to. Then I'd arrive the next day (the 9th) in Phuket. They are flying into Phuket on the 7th from Chiang Mai and spending the night and then going to Railay Beach on the 8th. If I stayed in HK for the long layover, I potentially miss seeing RB if they only want to see it for a day or they'd maybe spend another day for my sake and cancel seeing something else. They want me to get into Phuket on the 8th so we can see it all together. I'm torn. The layover flight is actually cheaper (anywhere from $90-$160 cheaper) and seeing HK would be amazing. But, then again, I am going on this trip because my friends were going. And I don't want to miss out on seeing RB.
Advice? Thoughts? I've missed traveling so much, I'm trying to maximize this opportunity, but I see merits in both choices. Appreciate your responses!
