I’m quitting my government job to travel

Hey guys! Welp, you read correctly. This is it. I’m quitting my federal (U.S.) research job to travel Europe. I put my notice in a little over a week ago, and my last day at work will be next Friday.

To start, I’m 26 years old. I graduated university with a bachelor’s in May of 2015 in biological science. Growing up, I always aspired to enact change in the world, to better it, even in some small way, and I figured bio research would be an impactful field to be in.

Fast forward two years later, here I am. I did it. I finished college with a completely average G.P.A., and somehow wriggled my way into a really amazing position in my dream field. Well, when I say wriggled, I mean half worked my ass off and half met the right people. I feel like success takes a combination of both, a sprinkle of luck and a dash of ass kickery.

Over the two years of working in bio research, I slowly started to feel all passion leave my body. I’m sure many of you know, if you’re in most any field of science with a bachelor degree, you’re essentially a robot. A lot of people would say to get a graduate degree, but I just didn’t feel like that was the right path for me, at least not right now.

I mentioned my aspirations of bettering the world, right? Well, I also have always had the same desire to see it. Experiences and learning are hugely important to me, as they are many of us, I’m sure. I have an almost insatiable appetite for gaining new knowledge and a better understanding of this doo-hickey we call life. (also a big reason I went into biology)

And, here I am, sitting in a furniture-less apartment because I just sold it all. I fly out to Portugal in early September with a one way ticket, and I plan to see as much of Europe as possible once I get there. I don’t exactly know what the future holds for me, but if people are interested, I wish to document this experience in some way. I’m thinking a photo blog website or something, as I don’t know how much writing time I’ll have as I get adjusted to being a traveler. As far as a time line, I have a Eurail global pass for three months, but depending on how things go, this experience may very well last much longer.

All suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Thanks for reading
