Has anyone here ever returned to a place where they experienced some significant memories? What was your reaction?
They can be significant memories that you experienced knowingly in real time or even ones you look back on, only to realise in hindsight how affecting and important they were. I recently went back to Cartagena, Colombia, 3 years later. The context of my original trip was founded in a recent and disastrous break up, which coincided conveniently with finishing University. Running away from my existential crisis puts it mildly. It was the first destination on an impromptu and ill-thought-out trip and I accidentally fell in love (don't worry, I know no one wants to hear another gringo sex tourist story). The thing that surprised me and caught me a bit off guard was how heartbreaking it was being back there. Seeing a specific street corner, dim bar or inconspicuous bench again, (even just the smell and feel of the humid air) where I had a kiss or a ate a new type of food, or most probably did something embarrassing (much to the hilarity of who I was with), caused dormant cells in my brain to spark back to life, inducing butterflies, a weight in my chest and a flush of memories in my mind that would never have prompted a recollection without being there, even if I tried. It was strangely sad to be back, most probably because I instantly remembered how happy and fulfilled I felt here, in comparison to my seemingly dull 'real life', which was cemented in between the two trips. I felt grief for my other self. Anyway I'm rambling now and getting a tad emo, I just wondered if anyone else had experienced a similar bittersweet feeling, or even a happy one (it is good to be positive ey?). Please share.
