Australian east coast, 8 days in October, where to go?
Main question here is which city to fly to. Any additional info on more specific details is also very much appreciated.
I'm heading to the east coast of Australia to meet up with a friend. She has more time than I do and is somewhat flexible in terms of where we meet up and where we go, but we know we'll be on the east coast somewhere.
I'll be arriving 7th or 8th October, and I can stay for 6-9 days. My work would prefer I come back as soon as possible, but it makes more sense to spread cost of the air fare over more days.
On our list of things we'd like to do, we have
- see some koalas and kangaroos, pet them if possible
- diving (neither of us have much experience, but I'm not a complete noob)
- skydiving (tandem jump)
- surfing (no experience)
I'd love to also see some green "tropical" nature (compared to the barren snowcovered wastelands I come from), go swimming for a bit and hang around at the beach, and be able to enjoy some nightlife (maybe not noisy clubs, but a sensible selection of bars/pubs would be nice).
So, obvious options are Sydney, Brisbane, Cairns.
Cairns is close to the Great Barrier Reef, which I presume means that there's good diving there. But it's significantly smaller than the other two - I worry that it might be too small? It also looks like it takes 10 more hours to get there from where I live.
Sydney seems to be where everyone goes. Does that mean prices are significantly higher? I'm not on a super tight budget, but if I can get the same thing elsewhere for 20% less I will... It's population is a lot higher than the other options, does that mean it'll be hard to get around?
Brisbane seems like a middle ground in many senses, but it doesn't pop up as a tourist destination that much. Any particular reasons?
Are there any other options I should be looking into?
