Solo-travelling across various towns in America without a car - is it possible?
Hi, so I am one of those people who made it to their mid-20s without ever learning how to drive. This isn't the typical solo-travel itinerary request: I am a Canadian that has been placed on the waitlists for a few American law schools and the general consensus among prospective law students is that visiting the school can be a big help getting off the waitlist. So I was hoping you guys with your solo-travel knowledge can give me some tips for navigating alone across various cities in the States, beginning from Toronto Pearson International Airport - whether it's possible without a car.
So far, I need to hit up Charlottesville, VA; Chicago, IL; St. Louis, MO; and possibly LA as well. I'm expecting that number to grow to at least two more cities by the end of this month.
What's the best way to get across America without a car? I've done solotrips across Europe and SEA, but transportation in those areas were never a real issue since they had either high-tech railways or chartered buses/tuktuks that were relatively cheap. But given what I have read about American public transport, it seems to be much harder to do a cross-country of the US without a car than it is to explore Europe by rail.
Sorry I can't be more precise at the moment, but I was wondering, if I were to visit around six cities varying in size from tiny towns to major cities in the next month or so, giving myself two weeks to travel total, how much I can expect this trip to cost me and how much of a headache would it be resorting to Greyhound or Amtrak? Would it just be cheaper to fly, and find buses / shuttles to my destinations from the airport?
