Is taking Spanish lessons first thing on my trip a good idea?

I'm currently planning a month-long trip to Ecuador. I'll be winging most of it, but I'm wondering if it would be a good strategy to spend the first week or two attending Spanish lessons (I have 0 knowledge of Spanish, can literally only say hello/how are you, and never took any Spanish classes in school). (Also, sidenote: learning Spanish is not the main purpose of the trip, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it a lot). A few questions:

  • Is 1-2 weeks worth of lessons (starting from absolute 0, but given I'm a hard-working student and have experience learning foreign languages) enough to teach me to get around on my own in the country? E.g. asking for directions or help, buying bus or attraction tickets, doing hostel reservations, maybe having smalltalk with hosts.
  • Most of the schools I've found online all have near-perfect ratings and reviews. Is there any reason for me to doubt the honesty of all these extremely positive reviews? Does anyone here have experience with Spanish language schools abroad? Will I have the same positive experience as these reviewers if starting with no knowledge of Spanish and going for only such a short time?
  • Some of the schools offer staying with a host family while going to school. Is that a better idea than staying at a hostel? I feel like I'd get better language practice if staying with a host family, but staying in a hostel I'd get more experience with the logistics of solo travel (i.e. getting food, booking stuff, talking to new people, etc).

If anyone has any relevant experience or thoughts to share, please do!
