Visiting Tulum, Mexico at the end of the year - any tips?

Hey all!

My Fiancee and I will be travelling to stay in Tulum, Mexico at the end of this year and I'm hoping to get some perspective from my fellow redditors who have visited the Quintana Roo area (or from locals ;)).

We chose Tulum because we're after the luxury resort feel, but don't want to immerse ourselves in the party zone that Cancun seems to be.

I've got a short list of things I've seen recommended:

  • Xel-Ha
  • Coba Ruins
  • Chichen Itza Ruins (though I think we might be fine with just Coba?)
  • A few Cenotes
  • Akumal Beach
  • Si'an Kan
  • A couple of adventure tours (any specific recommendations on these?)

Now to my questions:

  1. Are there any other MUST SEEs that I'm missing from my short list of activities?

  2. Would you recommend renting a car to travel around the peninsula? If so, any recommendations on reputable companies? (I've noticed that prices outside of the Cancun airport are ridiculous, but I can find cheaper rates if I choose a rental company in Tulum)

  3. If a rental car isn't possible (or we choose not to), what is the case for transportation from Tulum to various attractions? Am I going to be shammed by a taxi overcharging? Any other reputable modes of transport?

Thanks in advance!
