The World Financial Center In New York

http://bangladeshtourism.blogspot.com/ Besides Ground Zero, there is more to the Financial Center than meets the eye!

The World Financial Center was designed and created by Cesar Pelli and it comprises 4 postmodern buildings. The complex is located face to face to Ground Zero, the World Trade Center’s site, in Battery Park City. The construction of the WFC (World Financial Center) was finished in 1988. The center overlooks Hudson River. The landfill on which the Battery Park City was constructed also houses this huge complex. The landfill was in fact the dirt that was extracted from the World Trade Center’s site. That place was cleared so as to enable the construction of the 2 towers.

The World Financial Center encompasses 4 post–Modernist towers, combining traditional forms with new and innovative ideas. The buildings are made from glass and granite and on the top they have a unique geometrically – shaped crown. These shapes are characteristic for the owners of the towers: American Express has a solid pyramid; Merrill Lynch has a dome etc. The lobbies inside the buildings have tall columns and are made from shiny black marble.

The first tower features 40 stories and is 577 feet tall. The leasable office space inside the structure covers no less than 1.5 million square feet. This is the southernmost tower and it uses a pedestrian bridge to make the connection with the other buildings. The bridge was built across the Liberty Street. This World Financial Tower is the headquarters of Dow Jones & Co. The second tower is 645 feet tall and it has 44 stories. It is the 2nd tallest tower within the complex. The locals and the tourists find the domed roof of the building very attractive. The rentable office space inside the tower covers 2.5 million sq. ft. Some of the companies that have offices here are Deloitte and Touche, Commerzbank and Merrill Lynch.

The third building has 51 stories and it is 739 feet high. It is the tallest tower in WFC and it’s owned by American Express. The fourth tower is only 500 feet tall and it’s the smallest. This building is the world headquarters of Merrill Lynch, which also occupies the whole tower.

The World Financial Center also features a domed pavilion made of glass, called the Winter Garden. This has nothing to do with the Broadway Theater that has the same name. The pavilion sits between the 3rd and the 2nd towers of the complex. The impressive atrium was constructed in 1988 and it features tricolor Italian marble, Washington palm trees and glass panes. The Winter Garden measures 125 feet in height, 120 feet in width and 200 feet in length. Its western glass wall overlooks Ground Zero. The World Financial Center is willing to promote the artists and the arts. For this reason, it often organizes various artistic events inside the Winter Garden. The center is focused on performing and visual arts and it promotes premieres, site – specific installations and commissioned works.

During the 9/11 attacks, the Winter Garden and the World Financial Center were seriously damaged because they were situated very close to the World Trade Center. The complex was renovated and it’s fully operational these days.
